The wildcard is the most powerful chip in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and every manager gets two of them each season. Use it well and it can rescue a struggling squad overnight.
TL;DR: A wildcard lets you make unlimited free transfers in one gameweek without losing points — but you keep the new squad permanently.
A wildcard lets you make unlimited transfers in a single gameweek without the usual -4 point penalty per extra move. Crucially, the changes are permanent — unlike some other chips, you keep the new squad once the gameweek ends.
When you activate it, you can swap out as many players as you like, rebuild your bench, and reset your team value structure. The chip is played before the deadline, and your free transfers continue from the following gameweek as normal.
FPL gives each manager two wildcards:
Use them before they expire — if you miss the second-half window, the chip is lost.
These chips are easy to mix up. A wildcard changes your squad permanently. A Free Hit changes it for one gameweek only, then reverts to your previous team.
Use a wildcard when your squad needs a lasting overhaul. Use a Free Hit to navigate a blank or awkward gameweek without wrecking your long-term plans.
Most managers save their first wildcard until injuries, form swings, or price changes have made their original team obsolete. Popular timing includes:
Timing it around fixture difficulty is smart — check the Premier League fixtures before committing.

The golden rule: don't burn a wildcard just because you're bored. Save it for a genuine squad crisis or a clear strategic upgrade.
