The Champions League format changed dramatically in 2024–25, and it still confuses plenty of fans. Instead of the old group stage, Europe's biggest clubs now battle through a single 36-team league phase — and every match matters.
TL;DR: 36 teams play eight league games each, the top eight go straight to the last 16, and the next 16 fight through a play-off round.
Qualification still runs through domestic leagues and a summer qualifying path, but the shape is new. The 36 clubs are seeded into four pots based on UEFA coefficient and drawn against eight different opponents — four at home, four away. Crucially, no team faces anyone from its own country.
The top eight finishers advance directly to the round of 16. Teams ranked 9th to 24th enter a two-legged knockout play-off, with the higher seeds hosting the second leg. Everyone from 25th down is eliminated, with no safety net into the Europa League.
Supporters used to enjoy the comfort of a six-game group. Now clubs play eight league-phase matches, stretching from September into late January. The bigger fixture list means more heavyweight clashes but also a punishing schedule for squads chasing both domestic and European glory.
Every goal can swing the table, because qualification is decided on a single combined ranking rather than four separate pools.
From the last 16 onward, it's the format fans know and love: two-legged ties, home and away, decided on aggregate, with away goals no longer in play. Level ties go to extra time and penalties.
The final itself is a one-off match at a pre-selected neutral venue, usually in late May or early June. The winner lifts the trophy, qualifies automatically for next season's competition, and books spots in the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
Real Madrid remain the most successful club with 15 titles, while Paris Saint-Germain are the current champions after their 2025 triumph. UEFA and Wikipedia are the best places to track the full standings.
