Nothing stings more in Fantasy Premier League than watching a starter sit out — until automatic substitutions quietly save your gameweek. Auto-subs are the FPL safety net that promotes your bench when a starter plays zero minutes.
TL;DR: If a starter plays no minutes, your first eligible benched player replaces them, as long as your formation stays legal.
The rule is simple: an automatic substitution only happens when a starting player records no minutes at all. A player who comes on and plays a single minute counts as having played — so no auto-sub is made, even if they blank. Only zero-minute starters, including players who are suspended, injured, or left out of the squad, make way.
Your bench order decides everything. The game checks substitutes in order — bench spot 1 first, then 2, then 3 — and the first valid one replaces the missing starter.
Goalkeeper auto-subs work differently. Your reserve keeper only comes in if your starting keeper plays zero minutes. An outfield bench player can never replace a goalkeeper, and goalkeepers can't fill outfield gaps.
Auto-subs cannot create an illegal formation. Every FPL team needs at least one goalkeeper, three defenders, two midfielders and one forward on the pitch at all times.
So if your only benched defender is spot 3, and bringing them in would leave you with just two defenders, the auto-sub is skipped entirely. This is why bench order and squad balance are so important each week.
Auto-subs are applied after the final match of the gameweek has finished — once all bonus points are confirmed. Before that point, your live score won't reflect them. That's why your points can jump overnight on a Monday night.
Remember: manual changes made before the deadline take priority — anything after it is automated.
Mastering auto-subs is the kind of detail that separates mini-league winners from mid-table managers. For more FPL debate and fan banter, join the conversation on — the social network built for football fans. Read the official rules at .
