Nothing frustrates a striker like a goalkeeper who simply refuses to be beaten. The goalkeepers with the most clean sheets in Premier League history have built legacies on that stubbornness, turning the humble shutout into an art form.
TL;DR: Petr Čech owns the single-season record with 24 clean sheets, while he and Joe Hart share the most Golden Glove awards (four each).
Since the Premier League began in 1992, clean sheets have separated good keepers from great ones. A shutout depends on the whole back line, but the goalkeeper is the last line — and the record books remember them.
When Chelsea signed Petr Čech in 2004, few expected a 22-year-old to rewrite history. He kept 24 clean sheets in the 2004–05 season, a single-season record that still stands today, per Wikipedia's Golden Glove records. The inaugural Premier League Golden Glove, introduced in 2005, went straight to him.
Čech won the award four times and remains the only goalkeeper to claim it with two different clubs — Chelsea and Arsenal.
Joe Hart matched Čech's four Golden Gloves during Manchester City's rise, winning three in a row between 2010 and 2013. Before Hart, Pepe Reina became the first keeper to win the award in three consecutive seasons for Liverpool (2005–08).
Manchester City later produced another dominant run: Ederson claimed the prize three years running from 2020 to 2022, continuing the club's modern dynasty.
One mark stands alone for durability. In 2008–09, Edwin van der Sar kept 14 consecutive clean sheets for Manchester United and went 1,311 minutes without conceding.
The Golden Glove is now shared when keepers tie on clean sheets — a rule introduced in 2013–14. That change has spread the recognition, with David Raya among the most recent winners.
Clean sheets decide titles. Champions are built on defences that grind out 1-0 wins on cold away days, and keepers who deliver them become folk heroes.
From Čech's 24 to Van der Sar's streak, these records define elite shot-stopping.
Who is the greatest Premier League goalkeeper of all time? Čech, Hart, Van der Sar, or a modern star? Every fan has a hill to die on.
