The Champions League and Europa League are UEFA's two biggest club competitions, but they reward very different things. The Champions League is Europe's elite stage, while the Europa League is the next tier down — smaller stage, smaller payday, but still a genuine route to silverware and continental glory.
TL;DR: The Champions League is for domestic champions and top league finishers with far bigger prize money, while the Europa League is the second-tier competition with lower rewards but a Champions League spot for the winner.
The biggest difference between the Champions League and Europa League is entry. The Champions League takes the champions and top finishers from Europe's strongest leagues, plus clubs that come through qualifying rounds. The Europa League is fed by domestic cup winners, mid-table league sides and clubs dropping down from Champions League qualifying. Since 2024/25 both use a league-phase format, but the Champions League has 36 clubs, and the Europa League also has 36 with a slightly softer field.
Both competitions now use a single league phase instead of traditional groups. Teams play eight matches against different opponents, then the top eight advance directly to the knockout rounds. Sides finishing 9th to 24th enter a two-legged playoff for the remaining last-16 places. The Europa League's knockout path is more forgiving overall, which is why deeper runs are more attainable for smaller clubs.
The financial gap is enormous. Champions League clubs earn far more in participation fees, performance bonuses and TV revenue than Europa League sides. That money funds transfers and wages, which is why finishing in the top four matters so much. Per UEFA, both competitions now offer a bonus route: Champions League sides can drop into the Europa League, but the Europa League winner earns a place in the next Champions League.
For elite clubs, the Champions League is everything — history, revenue and reputation. For ambitious mid-tier teams, the Europa League is a realistic trophy and a gateway back to the top table. Either way, European nights deliver drama and debate.
