There is no feeling quite like it for a home crowd: watching your team crumble on their own pitch. The biggest home defeats in Premier League history are grimly memorable, and one scoreline stands above all others.
TL;DR: Southampton's 0-9 loss to Leicester in 2019 is the joint-heaviest defeat in Premier League history and the largest margin any home side has ever suffered.
On 25 October 2019, Leicester City dismantled Southampton 9-0 at St Mary's. It equalled Manchester United's 9-0 away win at Ipswich in 1995 as the biggest victory in Premier League history — and set the record for the heaviest home defeat.
Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez each scored a hat-trick, with Perez completing his in a stunning six-minute spell. Southampton's Ryan Bertrand was sent off after 12 minutes, and the Saints never recovered. Leicester finished the night in the top four, while Southampton's home faithful endured a night they will never forget.
Several famous sides have been buried at home:
Heavy home defeats expose more than bad defending. They reveal tactical imbalances, dressing-room fractures and mental fragility, and they often spell the end for a manager.
Interestingly, Southampton's 0-9 is not the biggest in English league history — that remains a 10-0 margin, but Premier League records start in 1992, so prior thrashings are excluded. Fans still debate whether the 1995 Ipswich mauling or the 2019 Leicester rout was more brutal. Both share the same nine-goal gap.
What unites them is the aftermath: apologies, inquests, and a long road back for the supporters who paid to watch.
